Residential & Commercial Refurbishment at Merchants Hall, London
Designed by Ben Adams Architects the newly refurbished ‘Old Sorting House’ offers a mixture of high-quality commercial office space and refurbished residential units. The works comprised of the sensitive refurbishment and extension to the former post office/theatre and warehouse building. With the goal to create new office and residential space, the project also involved work to the adjoining property on Packington Street and the complete new build addition to Queen’s Head Street.
The works involved: the full comprehensive design-focussed refurbishment throughout, the addition of second-floor storey with a pitched roof to the main hall with a generous roof terrace, the construction of a new four-storey building to Queen’s Head Street including stepped link to the main hall, a unique triplex of interconnecting floors within former Old Sorting House, the installation of new services throughout including air-conditioning, new architectural lighting, passenger lift, new windows, new WCs and cycle store including lockers and showers.
The result of this extension provides approximately 25,000 sq ft of prime modern office space combining period charm and contemporary style, including the provision of three brand new residential units.
The project was required to comply with BREEAM ‘Excellent’ to the commercial units only.
