Commercial Refurbishment and Residential Development at Merchants Hall, London
Designed by Ben Adams Architects the newly refurbished ‘Old Sorting House’ offers a mixture of high-quality commercial office space and refurbished residential units. The works comprise of the sensitive refurbishment and extension to the former post office and warehouse building. With the goal to create new commercial and residential space, the project also involved works to the adjoining property on Packington Street and the construction of a four-storey new building to Queen’s Head Street.
The works involved: the comprehensive refurbishment throughout the Old Sorting House, the addition of a second-floor storey with a pitched roof to the main hall with a generous roof terrace, the construction of a new four-storey building to Queen’s Head Street including stepped link to the main hall, a unique triplex of interconnecting floors within former Old Sorting House, the installation of new services throughout including air-conditioning, new architectural lighting, passenger lift, new windows, new WCs and the provision of new amenity space, cycle stores including lockers and showers.
The result of the completed scheme provides approximately 25,000 sq ft of prime modern office space combining period charm and contemporary style, including the provision of three brand new residential units.
The project was required to comply with BREEAM ‘Excellent’ to the commercial units and was registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme.
